Key repair for wobbly keys
Key fit is an important characteristic of a piano. Proper key fit occurs when the key bushing — the felt that stabilizes the key - fits perfectly on pins underneath the key. A good fit allows for smooth, controlled movement. Over time, this felt naturally wears down or swells. Or the wooden key stick itself can warp or swell. When these things happen, the playing experience suffers in noticeable ways.
If the bushings wear out, keys begin to wobble side-to-side. They feel loose, imprecise, and chaotic under the fingers. If the bushings or key sticks swell — a common issue in regions with seasonal humidity swings like Washington DC, Northern Virginia, and Maryland — the opposite problem occurs. Keys become sluggish and slow to return, making the piano feel sluggish.
In either case, the piano no longer supports accurate, expressive playing. For intermediate and advanced pianists especially, loose or tight keys become a real limitation. The instrument works against the player instead of with them.
There are several ways to address key wobble or tightness, but in many cases the most effective and lasting solution is a full key rebushing. This involves removing the old felt, precisely fitting new bushing cloth, and regulating each key so that movement is consistent across the keyboard. It’s meticulous work — work that requires time and patience.
The video above shows a complete key rebushing on a Walter console piano. After rebushing, the difference was immediate. The keys felt stable, responsive, and controlled again. This piano ultimately found its way to a new home in Falls Church, Virginia, where it should perform well for several years.
